They did. Used dark magic which wound up burning out their eyes with the power of it: layers of skin peeling off, turning black and cracked. Somehow they weren’t blinded by it, but like, it was a fucked-up look.
The dark magic was the goal, and the other bits were acceptable trade-off for them, I expect. Better spells, more powerful abilities, seeking immortality via the dark dimension, but at the cost of looking like a total freak. We called them zealots.
